Product Overview

The FN7-12 is an indoor air-insulated load break switch for three-phase 50 Hz systems at 12 kV. It makes and breaks normal load current and closes onto short-circuit current; in the fused FN7-12R form the load switch – fuse combination unit interrupts any current up to and including short-circuit current, giving reliable protection for distribution transformers and cable feeders. Nine standard configurations share one base frame, combining incoming- or outgoing-side earthing switches, mechanical interlocking, striker-fuse tripping and a motorised opening device, so the same series covers line load switching and transformer-feeder protection.

Construction

Air-insulated open construction: live parts, blades and current-limiting fuses are mounted on a common 770 mm steel frame, and the visible isolating gap is rated 48 kV for 1 min power frequency and 85 kV lightning impulse, so one unit serves as both switch and isolator within its rating.

The on-frame CS6 manual mechanism gives simple, reliable make and break action with low maintenance and needs about 1200 mm of handle clearance. On striker-fuse (RA) versions the fuse striker opens the affected pole after a fault, the L interlocking device enforces the correct sequence between switch and earthing switch, and the F motorised opening device permits remote or automatic tripping.

Selection note: Pick 400 A (12.5 kA, 4 s) or 630 A (20 kA, 4 s) against the continuous load current and the system short-circuit level, then state the earthing switch side (DS incoming, DX outgoing), the L interlock, R fuse, RA striker trip and F motorised opening options. In combination units the fuse type, rated breaking current and switch-fuse coordination data are fixed by the technical agreement.

Standards

The source datasheet quotes no specific product standard for the FN7-12 series. The switch is supplied to the manufacturer’s works specification and the agreed technical requirements, with routine and type tests on the main circuit and the isolating gap, and fuse coordination checked against the selected current-limiting fuse.

Technical note: Confirm the applicable edition (GB 3804 for AC high-voltage load break switches, IEC 62271-200 for switches and fuse-combination units) and the available test reports with the factory at order time, together with the fuse type and the switch-fuse coordination data for R and RA versions.

Installation & Dimensions

Installation Diagram

FN7-12 Indoor High-Voltage Load Break Switch and Fuse Combination Unit - installation

The FN7-12 is a fixed-mounted indoor switch installed on a wall or panel frame with the steel frame reliably earthed. Connect the incoming and outgoing cables to the terminals, fit the fuse cartridges on R and RA versions and refit the enclosing barrier. The CS6 mechanism uses a user-supplied 3/4-inch welded steel pipe extension rod with about 1200 mm of clearance, and the earthing switch and interlocking must be checked before commissioning.

Outline dimension Value (mm)
Base frame overall width (all versions) 770
Upper structure width, line-side version 600
Upper structure width, fused versions 890
Base mounting hole span 625
Phase spacing 210 + 210
Depth, upper section / overall 430 / 467
Overall height, line-side version 342
Overall height, fused versions 637
Support insulator section height (upper + lower) 266 + 266
Operating mechanism installation height 1200
Safety notice: Installation, operation and maintenance must be carried out by qualified personnel. De-energise, isolate and earth the unit before maintenance. The unfused load switch must not be used to interrupt short-circuit current – in the combination unit short-circuit clearance is performed by the current-limiting fuse. Never bypass the earthing-switch or door interlocks.

FAQs

FN marks an indoor high-voltage load switch, 7 is the design sequence number and 12 the rated voltage in kV. R adds current-limiting fuses to form a combination unit, D a striker trip device and (L) an earthing switch, while the final box states the rated current in amperes, so FN7-12DR/630 is a 630 A fused unit with striker tripping.

The plain FN7-12 is the load switch alone: it makes and breaks load current and closes onto short-circuit current but does not clear faults. The FN7-12R carries current-limiting fuses as a combination unit, so the set interrupts any current up to and including short-circuit current, which is what makes it suitable for distribution transformer protection.

Normal load current is switched by the break switch itself. On a short circuit the current-limiting fuse operates first and clears the fault; on striker-fuse (RA) versions the fuse striker then opens the corresponding switch pole, so the faulted phase is also isolated by the switch and the unit is safe to work on.

At the 12 kV class the 1 min power-frequency withstand is 42 kV phase-to-phase and to earth and 48 kV across the isolating gap, with lightning impulse withstand of 75 kV and 85 kV respectively. The 400 A version carries 12.5 kA for 4 s short-time withstand and 31.5 kA peak, the 630 A version 20 kA and 50 kA.

Indoor installation with ambient temperature between -25 ℃ and +40 ℃, altitude not above 1000 m, relative humidity of 95% daily average and 90% monthly average, an atmosphere free of corrosive or flammable gas, vapour and obvious pollution, and no frequent violent vibration. Other conditions need a technical agreement.

State the model and configuration (DS, DX, L, R, RA and F options), rated voltage, rated current of 400 A or 630 A, the required short-time withstand current, fuse type and rating for combination units, control voltage for the motorised opening device, quantity and any special service conditions.
